I grew up in church and learned all of the "religious lingo" that a good church kid should know, then joined the church when I was eight years old. It was not until nearly seven years later that God convinced me that I was guilty of sinning against Him and that Jesus loved me and had given His life in payment for my sins. It was at that time that I prayed for Jesus to take charge of my life. I had turned from my self-centered life and by faith had placed it in the hands of Jesus my Savior and Lord.

I married my lovely wife, Noella, forty-five years ago and still marvel at how good God is in making her my partner for life. God called me to minister His word in 1975, and after 4 years of seminary, I began my first pastorate in Union City, OK. Pawnee is our sixth church to serve in 33 years of ministry. We love it here and are excited about what God wants to accomplish through Pawnee First Baptist.

God has blessed us with three children, Christy, Melissa, and Jay, plus six almost perfect grandchildren--Audrey, Annaliese, Eve, Elizabeth,Griffin, and Riley. Pictures are available upon request.

I believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God and take very seriously my responsibility to teach it to God's people and to share its saving truth with those who are not yet His. My greatest joy comes when I see someone come to Christ, remain faithful to Him, and grow spiritually. We are born again according to His truth (1 Pet 1:23) and it is by that same truth that we grow (2 Tim 3:16). We hope you'll come celebrate the love and truth of God with us. May He richly bless you.

Growing up in church in Oklahoma, I knew that Jesus was a big deal. As a little kid I attended church regularly, but it was not until I was 16 years old when I put my faith in Christ. Since then I have never looked back. I was in the middle of a pursuit for a optometry degree in college  when God's call  came to serve in full-time ministry. I love serving my church and my students and cannot imagine what life would be like otherwise.

God's call on my life is to help students see the impact of the gospel on their lives and the lives of their family and friends. The gospel should be at the center of everything a Christian does. Matthew 6:33 says, "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be handed to you."  I want students to have a faith that is based in evidence for the truth of the gospel. Truth is discovered, not created. God has revealed himself through the Scriptures and I love to help students uncover the truth.

I am married to my high school sweetheart, Melanie. We have 4 children: Deacon, Eva, Elise, and Iris. Our house is never dull, and often messy, but it is full of love. God has been good to us. My hope is that it can be said that we love God and love others.

As a child church was the most important place for my entire family to go each and every week. I walked the aisle at the age of eight to accept Jesus as my Savior and Lord. At the age of 15, I walked the aisle again at church camp to surrender my life for the ministry. At that time I had no idea what type of ministry, but I felt the call to serve Christ with my life.

After graduation from college, I started my career as a band director, music teacher, and counselor. In January 1980, this church asked me to be interim minister of music. Since my school was right across the street from the church, it was a blessing to be able to walk across the street for special church inquiries or singing at funerals.

I retired from Pawnee Schools in May of 2009.  In March of 2010, the church ordained me to the ministry, and I became the minister of senior adults ( the Golden Guys and Gals).   I retired as the Minister of Music in August, 2012.   It is my blessing to oversee the 55 plus members, however,  I try to assist whenever and wherever I am needed.

Music

Daniel Kendle

Daniel Kendle joined the staff at Pawnee First Baptist Church as the Worship Leader in September, 2012.  He and his wife, Chelsea, became parents to Miles in August, 2016.  Daniel is also a teacher and baseball coach at Pawnee High School.  He and Chelsea are a blessing to our church family, and we are thankful that they are able to lead us using their gifts in music to honor God.

I was born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma, then met my husband, Jim, in Stillwater in 1989, and we were married in 1992.  We are blessed with two children, now college students.  I first came to Pawnee First Baptist Church as a “Mother of a Preschooler” in 1999.  Through the ministries of this church I came to understand the Truth, and through God’s leading, I came to know Jesus as my Savior.

I began working as the secretary at Pawnee First Baptist Church in August, 2004.  I feel blessed to work here, and blessed to be involved in the ministries of this church.   I continue to grow as a Christian, and remind myself that  “He who has begun a good work in you (me) will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”  Philippians 1:6

I look forward to helping you any way that I can.

Children's Director

Verna Culver

As a young child and teenager I attended the First Baptist Church in Ramona, Ok. I received Jesus as my  Savior when I was 10 years old during the spring revival. Even though my salvation was during the revival, my Sunday school teacher was the person that led me to the Lord. Then, Easter Sunday night, my father, my oldest brother and I were all baptized.

I have been blessed with 3 children, Eric of Little Rock, AR, Cara Beth of Tonkawa, OK, and Joey of Blackwell, OK. I have 6 grandchildren which are the joy of my life. They keep Grandma busy going to softball games and just spending time together.

I have been a public school teacher for 30 years. My last employment was teaching kindergarten for 26 years for Pawnee Public School.  I was Preschool Director at First Baptist Church in Miami, OK in 1980. In 1981 I attended a conference at Glorietta, New Mexico and at that time I realized that God was calling me to minister to young children. Upon returning to Miami, I continued as the Preschool Director and conducted a Preschool Program at my home. In 2001, I was called to be the Children’s Director here at Pawnee First Baptist Church.

Our Children’s Division strives to provide opportunities for children, grades 1st – 5th, to be taught the Word of God and Bible Truths. We want to show Jesus’ love and have fun.

Teach a child about the ways he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Preschool Director

Caryn Brock

The kids call me "Ms. Caryn." I was raised in church by Christian parents and I became a Christian at age 14. The Christian life is a journey and I have been on peaks and valleys, but through it all I have been assured that there is only one way to peace, joy and a true relationship with the one, true, living God and that is through His son, Jesus (John 14:6).

I have worked in the Preschool Department at FBC since 2003 and became Preschool Department Director in 2010. The Preschool Department is important because God says it's important. The Bible is filled with instances in which God demonstrates his value of children: God healed children (2 Kings 4:18-37, 2 John 4:46-53); He welcomed them in the church (Matthew 21:15-16); He welcomed them to Himself (Matthew 19:13-15, Mark 10:13-16, Luke 18:15-17); He encourages us to have faith like a child (Matthew 18:3); He issues a grave warning to anyone who would harm a child (Matthew 18:6, Mark 9:42, Luke 17:2).  Jesus loves children dearly. He does not take note of a child's socio/economic status, shade of skin, whether a child has had a bath or knows how to sit still during story time. We honor God when we love and value children in the same way He does.

I know how important it is to know that your children are loved because I have four children myself, all of whom have been a part of the FBC Preschool Department. My husband, Mike, and I have been married since 1993. Mike is a high school teacher and coach at Pawnee Public Schools and is an ordained and licensed Minister of the Gospel as well. If you have a child age birth through kindergarten, know that those who work in the Preschool Department will love and welcome him/her and that hugs are always freely given. We echo the apostle John, "I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth." (3 John 1:4).
